The Guest House

Castagni d'Oro, which means golden chestnut trees, was constructed around 1700, when most of the present village was built. There has, however, been a settlement here since the 10th century, mainly occupied by priests and pilgrims. These Medieval villages were built on top of hills partly for defence, but chiefly to make life more comfortable throughout the year, catching the breezes in summer and avoiding the weather in the valley below in winter. The breathtaking views are just a happy bonus!

This large house was built to the traditional Tuscan design, with metre-thick walls made of local stone and huge chestnut beams supporting floors of terracotta "cotto" tiles. Pantiles make up the roof and green shutters protect the chestnut-wood windows and allow cooling breezes into the house when the summer heat is on.

The house still appears much as it did in centuries past, both inside and out, apart from the requirements of modern living, such as central heating, double-glazing, and of course electricity! Recent renovations have provided en-suite bathrooms, and a large, central wood-burning fireplace makes the house warm and cosy for those winter breaks!

As the newest Bagni di Lucca B&B, we offer two spacious double / twin bedrooms, comfortably furnished and complete with en-suite bathrooms with showers and luxury towels. The rooms have British satellite TV, tea and coffee-making facilities and hair dryers.

In the cantina where the animals used to be brought in overnight, there now is a large garage and cellar area with ample space for storage of bikes, skis and sports equipment, and for drying wet sports clothes.

Outside, the sun-trap terrace and flat level garden provide spaces to sunbathe in the day whilst you watch the eagles soaring in the blue skies above, and to chill out in the evening with a glass of wine, watching the fireflies light up the gardens and hillsides.

Unusual for hilltop village houses in Tuscany, Castagni d'Oro has its own driveway with parking for up to three cars. However, the house is not really suitable for those with impaired mobility and we do not have facilities for very young children. Please note that smoking is only permitted outside.
